All will have holes unless smaller or mis-shaped. WEIGHT OR THICKNESS Due to the uneven thickness of raw hides, (a bull elk may be 1" thick in the neck, 1/2" thick in the back and down to 1/4" thick in the belly) our tannery splits the "top grain" or smooth surface portion away from the under or inside portion of the hide to get a uniform useable thickness of leather. The inside split off portions are then called "splits", suede on both sides. The thickness of the top grain depends on the type of animal skin and the purpose of use for the leather. We basically have three weights of leather: Garment, Heavy or moccasin , and extra heavy . In the leather business these are measured in ounces (one ounce is approximately 1/64 of an inch). Deer garment weight is 2 to 2 ½ oz. Elk garment weight is 3 oz. Elk heavy weight 5 to 7 oz. Elk, Moose & Bison extra heavy weight 8 to 10 oz. Another way to view this is 100 sq. ft of garment deer weighs approximately 12 lbs.; 100 sq. ft of garment weight elk weighs approximately 18 lbs.: 100 sq. ft of heavy weight elk weighs approximately 28 lbs.; 100 sq. ft of extra heavy weight elk weighs approximately 34 lbs.
